Attendance Matters – Centennial Elementary School
The Attendance Raffle initiative at Centennial Elementary School began as a creative solution to tackle low student attendance, a lingering issue exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea was simple yet impactful: incentivize students to come to school every day with the prospect of winning a random prize. Estrella, a dedicated Student Support Coordinator for Communities in Schools of Whatcom-Skagit and contributor of the attendance team at Centennial Elementary, collaborated with her colleagues and the Mount Vernon School District (MVSD) attendance meeting to brainstorm this initiative. The concept was to avoid students attending only on prize days by keeping the prize drawing random.
Every student at Centennial was automatically entered into the raffle by virtue of their attendance. The attendance secretary cut up names from the roster and placed them in a box. Each week, during lunch, one lucky student’s name was drawn and announced over the microphone. This not only provided excitement but also kept the students engaged and looking forward to attending school regularly.
Although the idea for the support raffle was brainstormed in November, the actual implementation began in January, after the students returned from winter break. The timing was crucial to ensure maximum impact and engagement. To kick off the raffle, teachers showed their students a promotional video, generating enthusiasm and anticipation.
Centennial Elementary School faced a significant challenge with low attendance rates following the return to in-person learning post-pandemic. Traditional methods, like calling home, failed to make a noticeable impact on improving student attendance. The students involved in Estrella’s Tier 3 support blossomed with newfound enthusiasm for attending school regularly. La iniciativa de la Rifa de Asistencia en la Escuela Primaria Centennial empezó como una solución creativa para abordar la baja asistencia estudiantil, un problema persistente exacerbado por la pandemia de COVID-19. La idea fue simple pero con mucho impacto: incentivar a los estudiantes a ir a la escuela todos los días con la perspectiva de ganar un premio posible. Estrella, una dedicada Coordinadora de Apoyo Estudiantil para Communities in Schools de Whatcom-Skagit y colaboradora del equipo de asistencia en la Escuela Primaria Centennial, colaboró con sus colegas y la reunión de asistencia del Distrito Escolar de Mount Vernon (MVSD) para desarrollar esta iniciativa.
