Communities In Schools of Whatcom-Skagit (CISWS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to supporting K-12 youth with attendance, behavior, and coursework (ABCs) throughout Whatcom and Skagit counties. We are part of a nationwide network of affiliates that follow the unique model established by Communities In Schools® (CIS)  in 1977. Additionally, we are part of a statewide network, Communities In Schools of Washington which includes 14 affiliates across the state.

We provide schools with trusted adult mentors called Site Coordinators who support students throughout the entire academic year. By establishing meaningful mentor-student relationships within schools, we are able to address the challenges that affect students’ social and emotional well-being. Our ultimate goal is providing students with the necessary support to enhance their academic experience and keep them in school.

Our Name

Originally known as Communities In Schools of Whatcom from our establishment in 2008, we expanded into Skagit County in 2016, becoming Communities In Schools of Whatcom-Skagit.

What We Do

Within schools, we assess students’ personal challenges and structural barriers. We then match students with compassionate Site Coordinators who offer lived experience and ample knowledge. These coordinators provide direct support and broker services, creating a welcoming environment and strengthening the connection between school and joyful life experiences.

Why It Matters

Nearly one in five students fail to graduate on time in Washington State. Communities In Schools offers a solution to the dropout problem. In partnership with public schools facing the greatest challenges, Communities In Schools of Whatcom-Skagit provides the resources and support to address the underlying reasons for high dropout rates.
