At Sehome High School we have started extensive check-ins with our mentees in our Peer Mentor Program. So, far I have received positive feedback about our program from the participants I have spoken to. They all had good things to say about their mentors and they felt supported by them. I also printed the students’ grades and I gave them a copy during the check-in. One student, Jacob was surprised by his grades, because he thought they would be higher. However, we came up with a plan to get his grades up and we set goals that he will work towards the rest of the semester.
I am not worried about Jacob at all. I know he will bring his grades up to passing because he is aware of the various support systems here at Sehome that will help him become a successful learner. For instance Jacob is one of our students who won the final reward in going to the Learning Center 540+ minutes. We had partnered with SHS’s Learning Center for an incentive program for our mentees in our Peer Mentor Program, and he now regularly attends the center after school.
