Graduating Senior, Kadence Thomas, Ferndale High School

When CIS Site Coordinator Emely Spencer first met Ferndale High School senior Kadence, she was at risk of not graduating on time. She needed to complete both her regular coursework, and her online credit retrieval classes in order to graduate on time. Facing her own challenges outside of school, Kadence’s path to graduating felt uncertain.

Throughout the school year, Kadence and Emely regularly met for academic and emotional check-ins. In the beginning, their meetings were brief as they were still getting to know one another. Kadence is naturally shy, which makes it difficult for her to ask for help when she needs it. During their meetings, Emely provided support to Kadence however she could, whether that was in the form of helping with coursework, communicating with teachers, or simply being someone Kadence could talk to in confidence about the challenges she was facing.

As the year progressed, Emely noticed a shift. During the first term, Kadence remained shy and reserved, but by the second term, she had become much more confident in seeking support and advocating for herself. She started asking questions, reaching out when she needed support, and taking a more active role in managing her academics. This growth was a clear sign that she trusted the support available to her and believed in her ability to succeed.

The biggest change I saw in Kadence was that she started to show up more and ask for help when she needed it.”

While her academic progress was important, her personal growth was just as significant. She learned that seeking support is a strength, not a weakness, and that she did not have to face her challenges on her own.

As a result of her hard work and determination, Kadence successfully completed both her regular classes and her online credit retrieval coursework, putting herself on track to graduate on time. Her grades improved, and she achieved a goal that once seemed out of reach.

It was kind of awkward at first, but that is how I am with everyone. Mrs. Emely is so welcoming that it made it easy to talk to her.” Kadence said. “I feel good about the progress I’ve made because when I came to FHS my junior year I only had 9 credits and I didn’t think I would have made it on time if it wasn’t for the support I had from Mrs. Emely.”

Kadence’s story highlights the power of consistent support and trusting relationships. Like many students, she had the ability to succeed but needed someone who believed in her and encouraged her along the way. Her journey demonstrates that when students feel supported and connected to a caring adult, they are more likely to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. Without that support, graduating on time may have been much more difficult. Instead, Kadence leaves high school with not only the credits she needed, but also the confidence to advocate for herself and seek help when necessary.

As Kadence looks ahead post graduation, she hopes to pursue furthering her education through cosmetology school.

“I’m so proud to have seen you grow into the lovely young lady over the past school year. You have shown great improvements, and I can’t wait to see where life takes you. It has been an honor making the cedar graduation cap for you to wear for graduation.”
